It was an era when women weren’t getting enough credit.  \nThis play is also about Henrietta’s life. She had to balance her love for science and looking after her family. DESCRIPTION:Date and Time of History Lecture: Firmina (The Life and Legacy of Brazil’s First Black Female Writer) in Provo\, Utah \nProvo City Library will have a history lecture on Firmina\, Brazil’s pioneering black female writer\, on Tuesday\, February 20\, 2024 at 7:00 p.m.  \n\nLocation of History Lecture: Firmina (The Life and Legacy of Brazil’s First Black Female Writer) in Provo\, Utah \nThe history lecture will occur at the Provo Library – The Nelson Attic\, at 550 N. University Ave\, Provo\, UT 84601.  \n  \n\nAbout History Lecture: Firmina (The Life and Legacy of Brazil’s First Black Female Writer) in Provo\, Utah\nMaria Firmina dos Reis (1825-1917) was Brazil’s first female novelist and the first Afro-Brazilian female novelist. She used her writing to advocate for the rights of enslaved people in Brazil. \nOne of her famous books is called Ursula\, which tells the stories of enslaved individuals.  \n Her work wasn’t recognized for a long time. But in the 1970s\, a researcher rediscovered her work\, and since then\, scholars have been interested in learning more about her.  \nAssistant Professor Jordan B. Jones\, a Luso Brazilian Literature and Culture scholar\, visited Brazil to learn more about Maria Firmina dos Reis’ life and work.  \nThis lecture at the Provo Library will help you understand why Maria Firmina dos Reis is important in history and literature. Newbery Honor recipient Christian McKay Heidicker draws inspiration from Bram Stoker\, H.P. Lovecraft\, and Edgar Allan Poe.  \nBut the event doesn’t end with the book discussion! Novak is known for his contributions to NBC’s iconic sitcom “The Office” and his collection of short stories\, “One More Thing.” True to its title\, his book\, ‘The Book with no Pictures\,’ lacks illustrations. It has a simple white cover with bold black text.
