Provo City Library will have a history lecture on Firmina, Brazil’s pioneering black female writer, on Tuesday, February 20, 2024 at 7:00 p.m.
The history lecture will occur at the Provo Library – The Nelson Attic, at 550 N. University Ave, Provo, UT 84601.
Maria Firmina dos Reis (1825-1917) was Brazil’s first female novelist and the first Afro-Brazilian female novelist. She used her writing to advocate for the rights of enslaved people in Brazil.
One of her famous books is called Ursula, which tells the stories of enslaved individuals.
Her work wasn’t recognized for a long time. But in the 1970s, a researcher rediscovered her work, and since then, scholars have been interested in learning more about her.
Assistant Professor Jordan B. Jones, a Luso Brazilian Literature and Culture scholar, visited Brazil to learn more about Maria Firmina dos Reis’ life and work.
This lecture at the Provo Library will help you understand why Maria Firmina dos Reis is important in history and literature. You can register for the event on the Provo City Library website if interested.
See you there on February 20th at the Provo Library!
