Black Sheep Cafe: Native American Restaurant in Provo, Utah

By Katerina Gasset

Tristan Gasset, my youngest son, and I were on our way to our photo session for photos for our social media, business cards, and signs and decided to eat before because we were hangry:).

Downtown Provo has some amazing restaurants, cafés, eateries, and bakeries. Downtown Provo is located on Center Street and also on State Street. Yes, nearly every town in Utah has a Center Street and a State Street.

Black Sheep Cafe is a Native American Restaurant located at 19 N University Ave, Provo, UT 84601.

It is a small café styled restaurant facing State Street and you enter in through State Street or through the corridor behind State Street.

The wait staff is super warm and friendly. Customer service was great.

I love the open kitchen concept! The cooks work the grills, and the prep areas - all within your eyesight. Nothing is behind closed doors. All the food is made from scratch. It is also fun to watch the cooks cooking up your meal!

Black Sheep Cafe Provo Utah Atmosphere

The atmosphere is cozy and simple. I liked the decor. Check out my photos here: (add my photos of the decor)

Reservations are suggested. We ate at 5 p.m. so it was ok we didn’t have a reservation, but I believe around 7 p.m. this will not be the case.

They do serve alcohol in this restaurant and have a wine and cocktail menu.

They also serve non-alcoholic drinks like lemonades, root beers, ginger beers, and soft drinks.

Cactus Pear Lemonade is a must-try!

Photos of the delicious fry bread we tried at Black Sheep Cafe in Downtown Provo...

Honey Lavender Fry Bread Served at Black Sheep Cafe

We ordered the Honey Lavender Fry Bread for our starter. It was delicious! This was the first time I ate lavender as a herb and not in my tea:).

The fry bread was fluffy, stretchy, and soft. So yummy! It reminded me of all the times I made fry bread on our family camping trips.

They serve buffalo meat at the Black Sheep Café- A Native American Restaurant in Provo.

Tristan ordered the Buffalo Nickel Burger with Rosemary Fries. SO good!

What my son, Tristan, ordered at Black Sheep Cafe Provo: Buffalo Nickel Burger

Black Sheep's Buffalo Nickel Burger

The burger was filling. The buffalo meat was cooked perfectly. These are among the best fries!

I ordered the Blue Corn Enchiladas without the meats. I had the squash and mushrooms. It was served with some of the best pinto beans I’ve had at a restaurant. Also, it came with their cilantro rice, which is also amazing.

The sauce I had since it was the vegetable option was a white sauce with cheese. It was really light and tasty. I would like to try the green sauce and the red sauce another time.

How Black Sheep Cafe in Provo, Utah Started

It all started with the owner Bleu Adam’s childhood. She grew up on the Navajo Nation reservation, where her family didn’t have access to necessities like running water and electricity.

They had to get creative when it came to surviving.

Bleu’s mom used to sell homemade pies and burritos to make ends meet, and that’s where Bleu learned the value of hard work, determination, and creativity. Those lessons have stuck with her to this day.

Fast-forward to a few years, and Bleu’s dream is to open her own restaurant - one that serves up delicious Native American-inspired dishes.

It took her six years to bring her business plan to life, but she never gave up.

Bleu and her brother now run the restaurant together, serving up mouth-watering dishes you’ll ever taste.

It’s no surprise that Black Sheep Café has become a staple in the Provo community. The restaurant has a welcoming and cozy atmosphere, which makes you feel right at home.

One thing that really sets the Black Sheep Café apart is their commitment to being a “From-Scratch” kitchen. This means that most of their food is made fresh on site every single day.

No canned goods or cheap shortcuts here - everything is prepared with care and quality.

And the food?

The Black Sheep Café specializes in a Native American Southwestern infusion that you won’t find anywhere else. They’re proud to be the only restaurant of their kind, and it really shows in the flavor of their dishes.

But that’s not all! One thing you can’t miss at the Black Sheep Café is their famous “Pop-Up Dinners.”

These are one-night-only events where the chefs put together 4+ courses of food specifically for the night - complete with great decor and photography to match.

Black Sheep Cafe Rating

Outside Black Sheep Cafe in Provo Utah

This wonderful Native American restaurant in Downtown Provo definitely deserves 5 stars!

Don’t forget to follow Black Sheep Café on for some mouthwatering food photos that will have you coming back for more!

We will definitely eat here again! The food was high quality, a tiny bit on the pricey side. If you have a lot of children this may not be the best choice due to the size of the cafe and the cost of the menu items.

There are so many menu items I want to try.. I can’t wait!

About the author of Move to Provo Utah Website

Katerina Gasset

When I moved here I was blessed to have my daughter to help with different things you need to know when you move to a new place. I had background from living here before but things have changed a lot too since the '80s.

We were able to get all the good places to eat down fast - since she knows all that and we have a lot of the same likes in food. But things like how to turn on my electricity or what power company services my home... well... I was at a total loss!

I know that other people moving to Provo don't always have family here to guide and help them. And most people don't have a real estate agent who gives them a welcome package on all the important numbers and places they need to know.

My goal is for this website to be your go to resource for everything you need to know before, during, and after you move here to Provo, Utah. I want you to have the best experience and love living here as much as I do
